Ban On Use Of Telegram On Government Devices In Ukraine Ukraine has banned the use of messaging app Telegram on devices used for government purposes. The government has banned the use of Telegram on government devices because of the increased risk of attacks from Russia.
According to the BBC, Ukraine has banned Telegram on the devices of government and military personnel and other personnel involved in the security sector. Russia started attacking Ukraine in 2022. The attack is still ongoing. According to the country’s National Security and Defense Commission (RNBO), Telegram has been banned to reduce the threat from Russia.
“Telegram is actively being used by adversaries for cyber-attacks, phishing and malicious software distribution, user geolocation, and missile strike enhancement,” the council said in a statement. In a conversation with the BBC, Telegram claimed that it does not provide messaging data to any country.
Telegram is the most used messaging app for government and military activities in Russia and Ukraine. The council said the app was banned after discussions with the country’s security officials, parliamentarians, and military personnel.
He said that he was never against freedom of expression. He thought that Telegram should be banned because it is more connected to the security of the country than freedom of expression.
According to a study conducted by USAID, 72 percent of citizens in Ukraine use Telegram. Pavel Durov developed Telegram in 2013 with the plan to provide end-to-end encryption (a system where the other party cannot access the message except for sending and receiving the message). A year after that, Russia took the position that the channels of the opposition community should be closed. Durov left the country, saying that it could not be negotiated.
Durov was arrested in France only last month. He is currently being investigated. The platform has more than 95 million active monthly users.
