Powerful Earthquake In Canada: A powerful earthquake has struck northwestern Canada. The magnitude 7 quake is considered one of the most powerful in the country.
The quake struck at 1:41 p.m. local time on Saturday in the Yukon Territory, with its epicentre about 250 kilometres west of Whitehorse. According to experts from the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck at a depth of about 10 kilometres.
At least 33 aftershocks were felt within three hours of the main earthquake, the largest of which measured 5.1 magnitude.
There were no immediate reports of damage, although many Whitehorse residents said on social media they felt the tremors.
The largest earthquake ever recorded in Canada occurred in January 1700. At that time, the epicentre of the earthquake, which measured magnitude 9, was off the coast of British Columbia.
Saturday’s earthquake occurred in an area of high seismic risk, which was also confirmed by an analysis conducted by Earthquakes Canada in 2015.
