A Giant 160-Foot Asteroid Is Passing Close To Earth Tonight The American space agency NASA has reported that a large asteroid will pass close to Earth today. This asteroid, named ‘2025 BK’, is 160 feet in size, which is the size of an aeroplane.
It is said to come closest to Earth at 9:39 pm Nepali time. NASA has stated that this asteroid is moving through space at a speed of 37,583 kilometres per hour, which will pass about 5.9 million kilometres from Earth.
Scientists have not listed it as a ‘potentially hazardous asteroid’ because it will be more than 7.4 million kilometres from Earth. However, due to its large size, it is said that if it hits the Earth, it could cause major damage.
According to NASA, this asteroid can generate energy equivalent to a nuclear explosion on Earth. NASA has clarified that there is no immediate threat to Earth from this asteroid. However, NASA is continuously monitoring, considering the risks that such asteroids may pose in the future. The ‘Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) has monitored such asteroids using various telescopes and radar systems.
In the future, missions like ‘Neo Surveyor’ will further help in identifying such objects and keeping the Earth safe. You can click here to see the asteroid map passing close to Earth today.
