Trump In Favor Of TikTok: Goes To Court Demanding To Stop Ban Newly elected US President Donald Trump has filed a petition with the Supreme Court to block the ban on TikTok. Trump has approached the court, requesting time to reach a political agreement.
In a petition filed in the court on Friday, Trump’s lawyer stated that Trump disagreed with the ban on TikTok and wanted to resolve the issue through political means.
Under US law, TikTok’s Chinese company ByteDance must transfer its ownership to a US company by January 10 or face sanctions from January 19. US officials have accused ByteDance of being affiliated with the Chinese government, a charge the company has denied.
TikTok has more than 170 million users in the US. That’s why the US Congress passed a law in April that required ByteDance to sell its ownership to a US company or face sanctions.
Trump met with TikTok CEO Shou Ji-cheo last week. In a court filing, he said the case presents a serious tension between free speech and national security.
The Supreme Court, which had previously denied TikTok temporary relief, said it would give both sides a chance to present their case in January. The move puts TikTok’s future in doubt in the US and deepens the debate between national security and free speech.
