Steve Jobs Is Gone Forever But His Legacy Lives On Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, died exactly 13 years ago today, on October 5, 2011. Although his physical body has left the earth, the impact of his contribution is still ongoing.
Every year on Steve Jobs Memorial Day, Apple pays tribute in some way. Especially since Apple’s homepage has been changed, Apple has brought the facility of putting words of tribute on the page of his name.
In 2021, Apple placed Jobs’ wife Lauren Powell Job’s message on the homepage. In 2023, Apple CEO Tim Cook made a post on Twitter (X) in memory of Jobs.
Before his 11th anniversary in 2022, Cook, Powell Jobs and Jony Ive discussed him on stage.
During a conversation with Kara Swisher at the ‘Code 22’ panel discussion, Powell Jobs announced the launch of the Steve Jobs Archive online.
This archive was created as a growing tribute and inspiration. It was planned to include a book later. The archive started with an email sent by Steve Jobs to himself. According to reports, Jobs often emailed himself notes and ideas.
“I am totally dependent on them for my life and well-being so I love and admire my species, living and dead,” he said at the end of his email, “sent from my iPad.”
Steve Jobs died in 2011
Steve Jobs passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at 3:00 PM (Pacific Time). He was at his home in Palo Alto at the time.
The Santa Clara County Public Health Department immediately stated that the cause of his death was respiratory failure. However, the main cause of his death was a metastatic Pancreas Neuroendocrine Tumor’. The next day, Steve Jobs’ wife issued a statement. which read:
“Steve, rest in peace today with your family.
Known as a visionary in public life, he loved his family in private life.
We are grateful to everyone who shared their well wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness. A website will be provided for those wishing to leave tributes and memories.
We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us. And we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.”
When Steve was 49, he was suffering from pancreatic cancer of a serious nature. From that time until he was 56 years old, he was undergoing treatment. That is why he was aware of his health when he gave a speech at Stanford University in 2005. He said he would talk about death.
“I now have the liver of 20 young people who died in a car accident,” he said, “They were willing to donate organs and I was able to survive because of their kindness.”
His colleague Tim Cook was ready to donate his liver to Steve Jobs. But Steve rejected his proposal. In 2011, Tim Cook took over Steve Jobs’ work because he had to take medication.
The last time Steve appeared in a public event was on June 7, 2011. At that time, he talked about his plans to build an Apple Park.
Three months later, on August 24, 2011, Steve Jobs officially stepped down as CEO. And, Tim Cook became the CEO.
That evening, Steve told biographer Walter Isaacson, “I’ve had a very fortunate career. My life is equally lucky. I did everything I could.”
On 5 October 2011, he passed away forever. As news of Steve’s death spread, his friends, colleagues and former competitors spoke about him. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, said, “The world rarely has a person who has had such a profound impact as Steve. His effects will be felt for hundreds of generations. Many of us were lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with him. This is a very great honour. I will always miss Steve.”
About a week later, Apple released the video publicly. This video is not currently available on Apple’s site. However, a memory page is available. On that page, you can read words of remembrance written by people about Steve Jobs. Apart from that you can also contribute your words.
Apple continues to maintain that page and every year Tim Cook pays tribute to Steve on his memorial day.
