Commitment To Register TikTok In Nepal Establish Contact Points The ban on TikTok has been lifted in Nepal. The cabinet meeting held on Thursday decided to conditionally lift the ban on TikTok. Government Spokesperson and Minister of Communication and Information Technology Prithvisubba Gurung said that the ban has been lifted after TikTok is ready to accept the conditions set by the Nepalese government.
Under this, according to the ‘Social Network Operation Guideline 2080’, TikTok should be listed in the ministry, a contact office (point of contact) should be designated in Nepal, support in tourism promotion, and other conditions should be included. Minister Gurung said that after TikTok agreed to accept these conditions in the discussions with the government, the decision to open the ban was reached.
In addition, there are conditions to support digital security and literacy, to make public education based on information technology, and to ensure filtering and moderation of Nepali languages on TikTok.
On Kartik 27 of last year, the then Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda ‘-led government banned TikTok saying it hurt social harmony and the environment. But the government’s move was immediately criticized saying that the ban on TikTok was against the right to freedom of expression and communication guaranteed by the constitution. In this regard, 14 separate writs were filed in the Supreme Court.
After the government banned it, there was an increase in the trend of using VPN and Open DNS to run TikTok. The fact has also come out that the TikTok ban has caused a huge financial loss to Nepal. Due to the increase in international bandwidth imports due to the displacement of cash servers, Nepal has suffered a loss of more than two billion in the last nine months, while telecom and internet companies have lost about five billion in income.
