A Letter From Organizations Including Facebook and Google to the Government: Stop Registration of Social Networks in Nepal The Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) has requested that the government of Nepal immediately ban the registration of social media platforms in the country. On Tuesday, while sending a letter to the Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, the AIC requested to block the registration of social media platforms until the Social Media (Use and Regulation) Bill is finalized.
 
AIC has warned that the provisions mentioned in the bill will cause various challenges and will also affect the digital economy of the country.
 
Similarly, it has been mentioned in the letter that the proposed registration process will create administrative obstacles for AIC-member internet companies. The AIC has classified as sensitive information the documents related to user statistics, platform activities, security standards, and tax information provided by the government.
 
 
The letter mentions that the law to remove content uploaded on social media platforms raises questions about human rights. 
 
In the bill, it is said that social media platforms should open offices in the country and local people should be kept as information persons. AIC argues that due to this, the operating expenses of small internet companies will increase.
 
AIC has warned that due to such complex legal provisions, Nepalese users may be deprived of using global internet services.
