Google, Facebook and X affiliates have sent a letter to Communications Minister Sharma Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) has requested the Minister of Communication and Information Technology Rekha Sharma for a meeting regarding the recent ban on social media in Nepal. This organization affiliated with various technology companies has requested to discuss the guidelines for regulating social media in Nepal and the ban on social media.
In the letter sent to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Krishna Bahadur Raut and Chairman of Nepal Telecommunication Authority Purushottam Khanal, AIC has mentioned three main issues.
The letter mentions the recently issued Social Media Regulation Guidelines 2080, the Tiktok ban, and discussions with stakeholders. According to AIC’s analysis, the government of Nepal has issued the guidelines without any discussion or coordination with the social media, and this will make it difficult for the social media companies.
AIC said that the government’s sudden ban on social media could harm the confidence of investors and the digital objectives of Nepal.
AIC has proposed a meeting with the Ministry, saying that it is necessary to have a direct or virtual discussion on these various questions.
The world’s famous companies like Meta, Amazon, Apple, Google, X Corp, LinkedIn, Rakuten, Yahoo, Spotify and Booking.com are members of this organization.
But the government will make a decision about the social media platform which one is best to use and which one is bad to use to get policy violence happen in Nepal. The Government of Nepal will make rules and regulations under social media platforms to mention our figure to use them.
