China Has Developed A ‘Kill Switch’ That Can Secretly Cut Internet Cables 4 Km Deep Under The Sea China has unveiled a device that can cut communications lines at depths of up to 4,000 meters under the sea. The device was developed by government-backed researchers, the Economic Times reported.
Although officially intended for civilian use, its capabilities pose a security threat to global communications. Experts have warned that such technology could be misused in geopolitical conflicts, especially in areas such as Taiwan and Guam.
These undersea cables carry 95% of the world’s data, connecting continents and ensuring the smooth running of financial markets, defense systems and everyday digital services.
This ability to secretly cut underwater cables is believed to give China a strategic advantage in international conflicts. Guam, a key node in the US Indo-Pacific military network, hosts dozens of military and civilian fiber-optic networks, including Google.
The cable-cutter’s launch comes at a time when underwater infrastructure is facing increasing threats. Since 2023, there have been 11 incidents of underwater cable damage in the Baltic Sea.
