As The Threat Of TikTok Ban Increases: Another Chinese App Rednote Sees An Influx Of American Users As the possibility of a TikTok ban in the US increases, an app called ‘RedNote’ has become the most downloaded app on the US App Store. The app reached the top spot as the most downloaded free app on the US App Store on Monday.
As the threat of a TikTok ban increases, a large number of American social media users have been attracted to RedNote. The app is known as ‘Xiaohongshu’ in China. After RedNote, TikTok’s sister app Lemon Eight is the most downloaded app on the Apple App Store.
US users have said they will switch to RedNote if TikTok is banned on Sunday, January 19. US law has forced the platform to sever ties with its parent company ByteDance in China or close its US operations. However, the short video app is expected to be granted a last-minute relief by the US Supreme Court.
RedNote is an app that combines short videos with e-commerce. It was founded in China in 2013. The app is popular in China and other regions with the Chinese diaspora such as Malaysia and Taiwan. The platform has 300 million monthly active users in those countries.
According to the news agency AP, most of its users are young women, who use it for product, travel and restaurant recommendations, as well as makeup and skincare tutorials.
Some have also warned that they will stop using apps like Instagram and Facebook, which are owned by Meta, in protest if TikTok is banned. According to NBC, Meta paid a Republican lobbying firm to discredit TikTok in 2022 and is likely to gain new users if the TikTok ban is implemented.
