Even If The Ban Is Lifted: Why Is TikTok Not Running On The Internet The Cabinet meeting held on Bhadra 6 decided to lift the ban on TikTok. It was decided to lift the ban after Tiktok agreed to be registered as per the Social Media Operation Guidelines, 2080.
Even before the official decision to lift the ban on TikTok, some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) had already started running TikTok. In some cases, even after a week has passed since the decision, the ticktock has not run.
Companies such as Pal Telecom, Ncell, Worldlink, Dishhome, and others have not yet opened TikTok in their network.
Why isn’t TikTok running yet?
After the meeting of the Council of Ministers, Government Spokesperson and Minister of Communication and Information Technology Prithvisubba Gurung announced that the ban has been lifted. At the same time, when the journalist asked whether TikTok will open from today or when, the Minister of Communications Gurung replied, “We have to agree.”
In other words, Minister Gurung’s intention was that the ban on TikTok would be lifted after TikTok formally gave a commitment to comply with the conditions set by the government.
According to Minister Gurung, first of all, TikTok should be listed in the ministry according to Section (3) of the Social Network Operation Guideline 2080. After this, Tiktok will have to designate a ‘point of contact’ as per sub-section (6).
Apart from these, TikTok has to help promote tourism in Nepal, help with digital security and literacy, help to improve the quality of public education and make it technology-friendly, filter Nepali and other languages spoken in Nepal, etc.
Mamta Bastola, information officer of the Ministry of Communications, said, “It has been decided to open TikTok, and the further process is going on.” She further said, “The application submitted by them (TikTok) is being studied. Now, soon both sides will sit and discuss.” She said that after the necessary preparations are completed, the Nepal Telecommunication Authority will be formally instructed to open TikTok.
Spokesperson of Nepal Telecom, Kishore Kumar Bhatt, said that all the technical preparations for opening the ban have been completed. “We have technically completed all the preparations to open Tiktok,” he said, “we are waiting for a letter from the authority.” As soon as we receive the letter, the ticket will open.”
A representative of Internet service provider Worldlink also said that after receiving the letter from the authority, TikTok will open from its network. “Just as there was an instruction to close TikTok, there was no instruction to open it,” he said, “We are eager.” As soon as the instructions come, we will open TikTok.”
