Buddha Jayanti is Being Celebrated Today The 2568th birth anniversary of Siddhartha Gautama, or Buddha, who is known in the world as the harbinger of peace, is being celebrated today. Buddha Jayanti is celebrated every year on the full moon day of Baisakh.
This festival is celebrated as a remembrance of the contribution made by Siddhartha Gautama to the establishment of world peace. ‘Non-violence is the cornerstone of peace and friendship’, the bearer of many such age-old messages, Buddha’s birthday is celebrated all over the world, including Nepal.
As Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana, i.e., death, fall on the full moon day of Baisakh, on this day Buddhists around the world, including Nepal, celebrate Buddha Jayanti with emotional reverence and devotion to Buddha.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda lit the lamp at the Mayadevi temple in Lumbini on the eve of Buddha Jayanti on Wednesday.
On the occasion of Buddha Jayanti, he also addressed the photo exhibition and cultural evening organized in Lumbini under the joint initiative of the Indian Embassy and the Lumbini Development Fund.
Siddhartha Gautama was born on the full moon day of Baisakh Shukla as the son of father King Suddhodhana and mother Mayadevi in Lumbini Udyan in Rupandehi in 563 BC 2568 years ago. It is said that Siddhartha Gautama, who was born a prince, left the palace at the age of 29 to do penance because he was worried about the suffering of humans.
On the occasion of Buddha Jayanti, the government has called everyone to celebrate Buddha Jayanti by having Diwali at home in the evening.
Today, Buddha Jayanti and Umbholi festivals fall on the same day. The government has declared a public holiday across the country today.
