Ncell Chief Information Officer (CIO) Vishal Upadhyay said this while speaking at an interaction program organized by the Technology Journalist Forum in Kathmandu on Tuesday.
According to him, as a result of the TikTok ban, Ncell has lost an income of one billion 44 million rupees in just one year. It is said that there has been a big shock in Ncell’s mobile data income in particular.
The cabinet meeting on Kartik 27 decided to ban Tiktok in Nepal, saying that it hurts social harmony and the social environment, which is still in place. In particular, the telecom company’s income has been affected because customers used to buy mobile data packages to use the TikTok app, and when the app was banned, those users stopped buying data packs or consumed less.
Besides being the most popular social media app in Nepal, TikTok consumed 30 to 35 percent of the country’s total internet bandwidth. According to Ncell’s financial statement, the company earned 37 billion, 88 billion, 33 lakh, and 80 thousand rupees in 2022. In the third quarter of 2023, 35 percent of Ncell’s total revenue was from data.
Nepal Telecom said that due to the ban on TikTok, it has not brought out the exact data about the impact on the company’s business. Predictably, both Ncell and Telecom are considered to be equally affected by the TikTok ban.
