This Is How To Do Voice Typing On Your Android Or iPhone With the development of AI assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Gemini, we have become accustomed to talking to all our gadgets. But you may not know that you can actually type by speaking in the text input box that appears everywhere.
This can be very useful in various situations. Suppose you have a lot of luggage in your hands, or you are standing on the handrail and pole in the bus. Maybe your phone is far away, or the screen is cracked and the keyboard is not working properly. Or maybe you find it difficult to type messages by bending down on a small screen. In such cases, voice typing or speaking typing feature can be of great help.
You can easily switch between the two options of speaking or typing as per your need. Whether it is an email app or a web form, wherever the keyboard is visible, this feature can be used on both Android and iOS. Today we are telling you how to do voice typing on mobile.
Android
Gboard is the default keyboard on most Android devices, including the Pixel. When the keyboard appears on the screen, you can easily start voice typing by tapping the mic icon on the right. If you need more space on the screen, you can tap the downward-facing arrow next to the mic on the left while voice typing.
For example, you can say “delete” to remove the last word, or “clear all” to clear the entire input. The “next” and “previous” commands allow you to move forward and backwards in different text fields. Emojis can also be inserted by speaking; for example, “thumbs up emoji”.
When the text you type looks correct, suggestions for what to do next are shown below the input box. In the Messages app, you can say “send,” while in the Photos app, you might have to say “search.”
The part that appears when typing with voice on Android
If you need more information about which voice commands you can use, you can tap the small “i” icon on the left side of the toolbar.
If you want to use voice typing continuously in other input boxes or different apps, double-tap the mic icon. This feature will remain active until you turn it off.
If voice typing is not working, check if this feature is enabled. It is usually enabled by default.
To do this, go to Android’s settings. Now go to System/System management > Languages and input > Keyboard/On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Voice typing.
From the same screen, you can set the settings to use this feature offline as well. You can also turn on/off the option to automatically insert ‘punctuation’ (punctuation marks) as you speak.
The voice typing process is similar on other Android devices, although there may be some differences. For example, Samsung Keyboard is the default keyboard on Samsung Galaxy phones, and it has a mic icon in the bottom left corner of the keyboard.
To see if this feature is enabled, go to Settings > General management > Samsung keyboard > Voice input.
iOS
On iPhones, you can also access voice typing wherever you need it. Apple’s own keyboard is used by default, but you can also use alternative keyboards like Gboard if you want. The keyboard appears on the screen whenever text input is needed, and you can tap the mic icon in the bottom right corner to type by speaking instead of typing.
You can use various commands while speaking. For example, you can put an emoji like “heart emoji” or add symbols like “exclamation mark”. If you’re writing a long message, the “new line” and “new paragraph” commands make it easy to break up text into another section.
Similarly, you can use the “undo” or “redo” commands to move spoken words back or forward.
The voice typing feature on iPhone makes writing easier, faster, and more practical.
You can also use commands like “select sentence” and “delete paragraph” on your iPhone, which give you more control over the blocks of text you’re typing. It may not always be as perfect as you’d like, but it’s a great way to get the most out of most messages.
However, the ability to send text immediately with the “send” or “search” commands, like on Android, isn’t readily available on the iPhone. Sometimes the search will start automatically when you stop speaking. But usually, you’ll have to stop the voice dictation (by pressing the mic button or saying “stop dictation”) and then manually press the send or submit button.
This feature is set up by default in iOS. But if it doesn’t work, go to iOS Settings > General > Keyboard and make sure the Enable Dictation toggle is on. Other options, such as automatic punctuation, are applied as you speak or type.
