Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Passes 1600 Myanmar’s military council has said the death toll from Friday’s powerful earthquake has reached 1,644. The military said the number of people injured in the quake had risen to 3,408, and 139 people were still missing.
Earlier, Myanmar’s military ruler Min Aung Hlaing, said the death toll could rise. More than 694 people have died in the city of Mandalay, near the epicenter of the earthquake, while 94 people have died in the capital, Naypyidaw.
The tremors were felt as far away as Bangkok, the capital of neighboring Thailand. In Thailand, six people have died and 100 workers are missing due to the earthquake.
The US Geological Survey said a second earthquake struck Myanmar 12 minutes later. The second quake had a magnitude of 6.4. The epicenter was 18 kilometers south of Sagaing.
A state of emergency has been declared in many parts of Myanmar. The US Geological Survey said the death toll could be in the thousands.
