7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Caribbean Sea Tsunami Warning Issued A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake has struck the Caribbean Sea. A tsunami warning has been issued for nearby islands, the BBC reported.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicenter of the quake was about 20 miles (32.1 km) north of Honduras and 130 miles (209.2 km) southwest of the Cayman Islands.
Tsunami warnings have been issued for Colombia, the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Cuba, among other areas, following the quake.
The National Tsunami Warning Center said some countries were still at risk of a tsunami, and urged caution. The center has since canceled warnings for others, saying the risk was low.
The Cayman Islands government, in particular, has urged coastal residents to evacuate, saying there is still a tsunami threat.
According to the USGS, such large earthquakes are not unusual in this area. A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the same area in 2018, causing some damage and a small tsunami.
