Technology Companies Lay Off More Than 150000 Employees In 2024 2024 has been a tough year for tech workers. According to Layoff.FYI, 542 tech companies around the world have laid off more than 151,000 employees this year.
From global giants to small startups, they have cut jobs to adapt to the economic downturn and the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI).
Big names in tech have played a major role in this year’s layoffs. The list includes Tesla, Intel, Dell, Meta, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Intel cut about 15,000 jobs. That’s about 15 per cent of the company’s total workforce. The company, which is struggling to grow revenue, is reportedly cutting employees to cut costs.
Its cloud division in particular has been hit hard. Apple has cut about 100 jobs in its digital services group, while Microsoft has laid off 650 employees from its gaming division after acquiring Activision Blizzard.
The growing wave of AI has also been a major cause of job losses. For example, TikTok laid off hundreds of employees in Malaysia after using AI in content moderation. This has created a sense of insecurity among frontline workers who were supposed to be safe from automation.
Many companies laid off many people in 2024. This shows that companies need to be careful to protect people’s jobs even as they introduce new technology.
Big tech companies take on a lot of responsibility for creating new things and making big decisions. But those decisions are affecting people’s lives. This raises the question, ‘Will technology-related jobs be safe in the future?’
