Is AI Taking Away Coding Jobs Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making a big impact in various industries. It is also bringing a radical change in the role of the technology industry, developers and coders.
Meanwhile, Google’s head of research, Yossi Mathias, says that coding is still an important skill and that human developers have not been completely replaced by AI.
While the increasing use of AI tools has helped with coding tasks, Mathias believes that basic knowledge of coding is still of great importance, especially as new technologies change the way we work.
In an interview with Business Insider, Mathias said that learning to code is more important these days. He is also the Vice President of Google. He said, “Learning in basic academic disciplines is always important. Everyone should learn to code.”
Some experts claim that such AI tools can reduce coding time by up to 70 per cent. But Mathias expressed his belief that AI will not replace human coders.
He said, “AI can help with some tasks, especially at the basic level, but it has not yet taken over the entire process of coding.” Mathias further adds, “Code generated by AI still needs human review and validation.”
Acknowledging that current trends have brought challenges to the technology industry, he said that especially junior developers may find it difficult to gain the necessary hands-on experience. While such AI tools help with coding, they cannot complement the skills that come with real-life experience and hands-on practice. Mathias also said that Google is sponsoring some programs to reduce the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience for new developers.
Comparing the importance of coding in the digital world with the basic importance of mathematics, he said. He says that a basic understanding of coding is important for everyone, whether they want to become a professional programmer or not.
