Ex Ban In Brazil: Fined 12 Million Per Day For Using VPN The Supreme Court of Brazil has ordered to ban on the social network X. Judge Alessandre de Moraes took such strict action against X for following the court’s order to appoint a new legal representative in Brazil.
Judge Moraes has ordered an immediate nationwide ban on X. It has been alleged that the previous court orders have not been fulfilled and the fine has not been paid yet.
Last April, the judge ordered the removal of dozens of X accounts, accusing them of spreading false information. But Elon Musk, the owner of X, strongly criticized the court’s decision. He said at the time, “Free speech is the basis of democracy. But Brazil’s unelected judges are destroying it for political purposes.”
Brazil’s telecommunications agency has said it has begun the process necessary to ban X. Along with this, the agency mentioned that within 24 hours of the court’s order, X will not run throughout the country.
The order is said to remain in effect until X appoints a new legal representative in Brazil and pays the previously imposed fines.
Meanwhile, the bank accounts of Musk’s satellite internet company Starlink in Brazil have also been frozen. Starlink said that this decision is unconstitutional and argued that they cannot take responsibility for X’s fine. Elon Musk has said that X and Starlink are two different companies, so the decision on Starlink is unacceptable.
The latest incident has sparked a debate about the government’s ban on social media and the role of the courts in Brazil. Earlier too, Brazil had banned other social networks like Telegram and WhatsApp on charges of non-cooperation.
