Thasang Avalanche: The Dammed River Started Flowing The Boksikhola in Thasang Rural Municipality of Mustang, which was completely blocked by the avalanche that fell from the Manapathi mountain of Dhawalagiri snow range on Tuesday evening, has started flowing.
After about 13 hours, the river started flowing from Mulkhark located in Thasang Rural Municipality-2 of Mustang to the Boksikhola area on Wednesday morning. Gautam Sherchan, the spokesperson of the village executive, who is also the ward president of Thasang-2, said that the river started flowing from the blocked area on Tuesday morning.
“The Boksi River was completely dried up due to the accumulation of the avalanche that fell around 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday,” he said.
Sherchan said that the snow accumulated in the gorge was melted by the water of the river and started flowing slowly. Nine houses in the coastal area were moved to safer places during the night. Bhimprasad Thakali, a ward member of Thasang Rural Municipality-2, said that the snowslides accumulated on Pakho and river banks did not cause any human or material damage.
Boksikhola is a tributary of Kaligandaki. Boksikhola flows through three vertical rivers. Although there are no settlements in the vicinity, the Beni-Jomsom road is located in Boksikhola. Thasang Rural Municipality chairman Pradeep Gauchan, ward President Sherchan, and a team of security personnel inspected the place where the avalanche had piled up. There is no lake in the place where the avalanche is piled up. Chief District Officer Janakraj Pant said that the danger will be reduced as the snow will gradually melt, but caution should be exercised in coastal areas until it melts completely.
Earlier, on Kartik 28 and Falgun 21, 2078, more than 150 Chaunrigai were killed by an avalanche from Tukuche mountain in Thasang Rural Municipality-2 Kowang. According to the district administration, there was no human or livestock loss due to the latest avalanche.
