A Mobile App That Detects Malaria By Taking Photos Of Mosquitoes Various dangerous diseases are spread by mosquito bites, among which malaria is a major disease. This disease, known as malaria in Nepali, kills millions of people worldwide every year.
Identifying this type of mosquito with the naked eye is a difficult task. For this, you have to rely on the laboratory. Now it is possible to identify the mosquito species by photographing it using a mobile app called VectorCam.
This app will let you know if the mosquito can transmit malaria. Generally speaking, this will turn the phone into an entomologist. This app has been prepared for Uganda by bioengineers from Johns Hopkins University in America.
This app was created as a solution to Uganda’s lack of entomologists and high malaria incidence. From this, anyone can distinguish the species of mosquitoes that transmit malaria.
To make this app, financial support has been given from the Gates Foundation of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Makerere University, and the Malaria Prevention Fund of the Ugandan Government. Bill Gates has also informed about this through blogs and social media.
It uses computer vision to easily identify mosquitoes through a mobile app. It is said that it will be possible to take a photo of any mosquito, as well as details such as gender, species, and whether or not a person has been bitten recently.
Similarly, Gates wrote in his blog that he believes that apart from malaria, mosquitoes that transmit other diseases caused by mosquito bites such as dengue and zika can also be identified with this app.
