Now the .np Domain Requires a Fee Which Must be Renewed Every Two Years Now you have to pay a fee to register dot np. In the draft of the Bill on Information Technology and Cyber Security recently released by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, such an arrangement has been proposed about the dot np (.np) domain.
According to section 66 of the bill, domain name, service regulation, and management will be done by the Information Technology Department of the Government of Nepal. The private sector company Mercantile Communications has been managing dot NP since its inception in Nepal, but the government is now going to bring this work under its control through a new law.
Section 67 of the bill states that domain names must be registered. In sub-section (1) of that section, it is said that when any person or organization registers a name in the dot np domain, they must submit the prescribed fee to the organization designated by the Department (Information Technology Department).
In the same section, it is said that no one else can use the registered domain name.
Similarly, sub-section 3 states that the domain name should not be registered or caused to be too similar to the registered domain name. On the contrary, a fine of up to five lakhs has been set for registering a domain name that is similar to or depreciating the importance of protected names.
Government agencies have to register their office domain name under ‘government. np’. Similarly, a provision has been introduced that the registered domain name must be renewed every two years by paying the prescribed fee.
Similarly, it is also proposed that domain names that have been operating before should be registered by this law within six months from the date of commencement of this Act.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has asked for public opinion and suggestions on the draft of this bill, which is made to regulate information technology and cyber security. Those interested can send an email with suggestions on the draft to info@mocit.gov.np.
