AI claims that human fingerprints are indistinguishable We believe that a person has different fingerprints on his hand. However recent research done by Columbia University using artificial intelligence (AI) has given different results. University researchers trained an AI tool to detect fingerprint similarities. From that, they tested 60,000 fingerprints. In that order, the different fingerprints of the same person are 75 to 90 percent
University professor Hod Lipson, who also supervised the study, said that other students who participated in the study, including himself, were surprised by the results of AI. He also mentioned that they do not know the real reason for the results of AI.
The results of this Columbia University study are said to have implications for both biometrics and forensic science. For example, unknown fingerprints were found at crime scenes ‘A’ and ‘B’. Now it may be difficult to confirm that both of them belong to the same person. But AI can identify it.
However, no one in the study group had a forensic background. Therefore, they said that it is necessary to do more research on this matter.
Similarly, this AI was trained on limited data. To further develop it, it is said that it is necessary to train AI on a large amount of fingerprints. However, this study by Columbia University has been peer-reviewed. Now this study will be published in Science Advances journal.
