Honorary Oscar Award with Angela Bassett Hollywood actress Angela Bassett has been awarded an honorary Oscar for her iconic roles from Tina Turner to the Queen of Wakanda. Comedian Mel Brooks also picked up the Oscar’s golden trophy. Leonardo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper, and Natalie Portman were honored with an honorary Oscar during the Governors Awards.
Accepting the Oscar trophy, actress Bassett named the 10 Oscar-winning actresses and dedicated the win to them. She expressed her hope that the film industry would provide opportunities for more black women.
“My prayer is that we leave this industry richer, more forward-thinking, and more inclusive than we found it,” Bassett said on the occasion. “At the end of the day, we all want to have the opportunity to do great, meaningful work.”
Bassett and the other honorees were selected by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The next competitive Oscar award will be distributed in March.
The 97-year-old writer, director, and actor Brooks began his career by writing comedy routines for Sid Caesar’s TV show in the 1950s before making films like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.
