TikTok Said: US Bans US and Goes to Court that it will go to court if the US enacts a law banning Tiktok. Michael Beckerman, Head of Public Policy at US-based Tiktok, has said that if the recently passed bill is enacted into law, it will go to court.
“Enacting such a law is a violation of the rights of 170 million American users,” he said, “and we will continue to fight against it.”
Tiktok has also accused the United States of trying to undermine citizens’ right to free speech by enacting a law that bans the sale of Tiktok ownership.
After the US House of Representatives passed a bill on Saturday to ban the app without selling the ownership of TikTok to them, Tiktok has accused US lawmakers of trying to violate the rights of citizens.
In a statement released by TikTok, it is written, “In the name of security, the House of Representatives is trying to trample on the free speech rights of 170 million Americans by passing the bill.”
360 MPs of the Assembly voted in favor of banning TikTok, and 58 MPs voted against it. They passed the bill and sent it to the Senate. In the bill, the Chinese company ByteDance has been given nine months to sell its ownership.
Both the Republicans and the Democrats of the United States protested, saying that TikTok would have a serious impact on national security. They accused Beijing of spying on American users through TikTok and suppressing public debate. But TikTok has been claiming that it has not shared the data of American users with the Chinese government.
Civil liberties organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union and Columbia University’s Knight First Amendment Institute, have also opposed the bill, saying it would infringe on citizens’ rights to free speech.
