 Who is Yogi Adityanath?

Yogi Adityanath is an Indian Hindu monk and politician who is the current Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, in office since 19 March 2017. He was appointed as the Chief Minister after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, in which he was a prominent campaigner. Adityanath is also the Mahant (head priest) of the Gorakhnath Math, a Hindu temple in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Born in the town of Panacur, in the district of Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, Adityanath spent his childhood in the village of Khali, near Pauri. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in Uttarakhand. In the early 1990s, he became involved with the Hindu nationalist organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its affiliate, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In 1995, he was elected as the MP from the Gorakhpur constituency.

Adityanath is a Hindu monk and a staunch advocate of Hindutva, or Hindu nationalism. He has been accused of inciting religious violence and promoting anti-Muslim sentiment. In 2005, he was banned from entering the state of Uttar Pradesh for six years by the then-Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, due to his involvement in the Gorakhpur riots.

He was the fifth of seven children born to Anand Singh Bisht and his wife, Saraswati Devi. His father was a forest ranger. Adityanath spent his childhood in Garhwal and studied at the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in Srinagar. He completed his B.Sc. in Mathematics from Gorakhpur University in 1995.

He has been a disciple of Mahant Avaidyanath, the head priest of the Gorakhnath Math, a Hindu temple in Gorakhpur, since childhood. Adityanath was appointed as the head priest of the Gorakhnath Math after the death of his guru in September 2014.

Adityanath has been active in politics since the early 1990s. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1998. He has been re-elected five times since then. He was appointed as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in March 2017.

He represents the Gorakhpur constituency in the Lok Sabha and is the Mahant, or head priest, of the Gorakhnath Mutt, a Hindu temple in Gorakhpur. He is also the founder and president of the Hindu Yuva Vahini, a right-wing Hindutva youth organization.

In March 2017, Yogi Adityanath was appointed as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He is known for his controversial statements and actions, including his support for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya and his opposition to the conversion of Hindus to other religions.

Today is Yogi Adityanath’s birthday. He is a major figure in the Hindu nationalist movement and was the longest-serving member of the 12th Lok Sabha.
